ASOS National Distribution Centre, Barnsley

As a global brand with a young customer base, corporate social responsibility is extremely important to ASOS who asked Brand Lighting Design to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs at the main distribution centre in Barnsley Yorkshire.

 

Currently handling all orders and operating 24 hours a day, the building is vast, with a footprint equal to eight football pitches. Conducting a full lighting audit we learnt that it used a mix of fluorescent PLL, PLC, T5 and T8 lamps in over 6700 fittings. With usage data and estimated occupancy levels provided by ASOS, our report showed that the existing lighting consumed 5.87million kW per year.

 

To describe the solution for the whole facility is beyond the scope of this summary, so let's examine the main picking warehouse. Arranged over five mezzanine floors this huge space was lit by 5655 twin T5 battens and on its own accounted for over 3 million kW hours per year.

 

After examining a number of options, considering all variables including ease of installation, we proposed Dextra’s EPKL 4K 42w LED battens: a quality product from an established manufacturer who offer credible warranties.

 

In order to achieve the highest energy saving, 80% of these were to be controlled by integral occupancy sensor and we recommended that luminaires in busy areas had a longer delay while less visited areas housing less popular lines, have a much shorter delay. This would offer the dual benefit of a greater energy saving and a better working environment, as lights would not be flicking on and off throughout the day in high traffic areas.

 

In order to provide a total turnkey solution and guarantee the integrity of the installation, Brand introduced W Portsmouth – a commercial contractor with whom we have worked on many similar large projects. W Portsmouth were typically excellent and completed the challenging work - in a very busy distribution centre which remained fully operational - in just eight weeks.

 

We calculated that our solution for the whole facility would save an incredible 4.46million kW hours per year: A reduction of 76%! This will reduce annual carbon emissions by over 2300 tonnes.
